The Unlikely Hero of the Heart: Fish Oil

September 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Diet, Health

There is one kind of polyunsaturated oil that may be especially protective against heart attacks—yet, you’d never want to sprinkle it over your beautiful fresh spinach salad. Fish oil.

The first clues that there might be something “fishy” about fish oil turned up some years ago, when scientists studying the health of different world populations noticed an especially low incidence of coronary heart disease among Eskimos of Greenland and Japanese people living in fishing villages on the sea. Though widely separated geographically, these two populations had at least one thing in common: Both groups consumed tremendous amounts of fatty fish, fish oil, whale blubber and other marine life that fed on fish. At first, their healthy hearts seemed incongruous, since very high levels of fat in the diet—regardless of the source of that fat—are considered a risk factor in heart disease. Further studies revealed that both the maritime Japanese and Eskimos had low levels of triglycerides (a kind of blood fat), high levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol—the good kind of cholesterol—and a reduced tendency for their blood to clot. All those things are classic signs suggesting a sound, healthy cardiovascular system. W hat was going on?

Oiling the Mechanism of Your Heart

September 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Diet, Health

One of the major frustrations in trying to identify specific dietary factors that may affect the health of the heart is that human beings cannot be treated like laboratory animals. Sure, you can get 20 volunteers and add something or subtract something from their diet for six weeks, and you can measure the changes in their serum cholesterol or whatever over that time. But what really matters is how your health and your heart are affected for better or worse, which in practical terms means that you would have to track a group of people for at least five years before any notable trends became obvious. Even more difficult—you would have to figure out some way of making sure that all those people stuck to whatever diet you put them on.

One of the few studies to break through this wall of frustration was designed to clarify the effect of different oils on the heart. Scientists in Finland solved the logistics of such a study by conducting it in mental hospitals, using only long-term patients, whose diet was beyond their personal control, and who could easily be followed for many years. We might add that the fact that this study was carried out in Finland was no accident, since that country has the distinction of having the highest heart attack rate in the world, a statistic usually linked with the high concentration of saturated fats from dairy products, meat and eggs in the Finnish diet.

During your Pregnacy You Need to Avoid Some Cheeses

September 19th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Diet, Pregnancy and Baby

You need to avoid some cheeses. Certain cheeses, mostly those that are mold-ripened or blue-veined, put you at risk. The reason you need to avoid these cheeses is because they have a higher risk of growing bacteria that can cause listeria. However, when any cheese (even those you would normally avoid) has been thoroughly cooked, it is acceptable to eat.
Cheese can be a great source of protein and calcium. So if you like cheese and have it in your diet, you simply need to know which cheeses are appropriate in pregnancy. Since most cheeses are made of pasteurized milk products, most are considered safe for pregnancy and during breastfeeding. Here are some of the most popular cheeses you should avoid in pregnancy:
•    Feta
•    Brie
•    Camembert
•    Romano
•    Gorgonzola
•    Roquefort
There are obviously more cheeses than this that you may need to avoid. Always err on the side of caution when eating cheese that you’re unsure of. There will be plenty of time in your life to enjoy cheese, when you’re not pregnant.
