Families lose important opportunities when TV viewing replaces time parents and children can spend together, and children lose out when TV substitutes for household responsibilities or is used as an alternative for healthy after-school activities.

Due to television, many families function differently than they did a generation ago. TV viewing has encroached upon many family activities—even on shared mealtimes. In some households family discussions are almost nonexistent. In many families there has even been an end to constructive disagreement, which can be a form of learning and a stimulus to problem-solving and character formation.

Thus, in too many homes, everything seems to revolve around television. Youngsters often say things like “I’ll do/my chores, Dad, after this show is over,” or “I can’t go out to dinner with the family now; my favorite program is coming on.”

Ironically, some children are busier than ever, with many scheduled activities—soccer, Scouting, music lessons—and less free time. Yet TV, not the family, dominates whatever time remains. The TV set also draws youngsters away from their homework, often creating conflict and tension within the family. As a rule, homework and TV don’t mix; if your child needs to study, the television set should be off., and children lose out when TV substitutes for household responsibilities or is used as an alternative for healthy after-school activities.
